It’s widely known that millions of people in the UK expose themselves, their families, their employees and their customers to the risk of electrical accidents which can cause injury and even death. As Mark Smith, owner of MS Electrical Services, explains, the MS Electrical team are committed to reducing electrical accidents in the home and the workplace and to educating employers and families about the risks associated with electricity.
“We’re passionate about electrical safety,” says Mark, “yet we find that many customers are unaware of simple actions they can take to reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring. It may be as fundamental as not overloading your sockets or extension leads, or never taking mains appliances into the bathroom. Wherever we can, we work with customers to help them understand the dangers and to ensure a safe environment for their staff, visitors and families.”
It’s especially important to make sure that the electrical installation in your office or property is well maintained, and also that it is tested regularly. That testing is of course useful, but there are also simple visual checks that can be carried out at any time. It’s worthwhile, for example, to check that you have RCD protection in your fusebox, to ensure that plugs and sockets aren’t damaged and that cables are in good condition, and to avoid storing items on top of a microwave. Above all, it’s important to switch off electrical items when they aren’t in use.
To help, Electrical Safety First have developed an app which allows anyone to carry out a quick, visual check to ensure their home is electrically safe. The app is available for Android, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and is available from the App Store and Google Play Store when you search for ‘Electrical Safety First’. And if you’re at all concerned about any aspect of electrical safety, we specialise in PAT testing and fixed wire testing in Cambridge, Ely and Newmarket, so please call us on 01223 850301 / 01353 665106 for an initial discussion.
