Keeping electrical safety in check

Keeping electrical safety in check

Staying safe at work

1st September 2016

Ask anyone and they will undoubtedly confirm that electricity – a necessity at both home and work – can also be extremely dangerous, causing injury and even death. Yet many businesses continue to overlook even basic elements of electrical safety throughout their premises, therefore compromising the health and safety of their most precious commodity – their staff.

At MS Electrical we’ve attended many premises to find fundamental issues which could easily have been avoided through regular PAT testing and fixed wire testing. Some examples of possible causes of injury at work include electrical equipment which is poorly maintained or used inappropriately in an unsuitable environment, fires started by faulty electrical equipment, and damaged electrical equipment which should have been discarded but is still in use. It is also good practice to conduct regular visual checks of cables and extension leads. Outer cables which have been crushed or cut through to the inner cables should be replaced immediately, while overloaded extension leads are a fire hazard. Lack of earthing and multiple connections are also dangerous.

As Mark Smith, owner of MS Electrical Services, states, it’s important that any business takes their electrical safety seriously. “At MS Electrical our focus is very much on electrical safety, but we understand that businesses can be so focused on their day-to-day activities that PAT testing and fixed wire testing can slip below the radar. The encouraging thing is that when we undertake site visits and explain about how electrical safety testing can help protect their staff and meet their regulatory obligations, clients frequently engage us to undertake their electrical safety testing on an ongoing basis.”

MS Electrical Services offers PAT testing in Cambridge, Ely and Newmarket and fixed wire testing in Cambridge, Ely and Newmarket. Call us on 01223 850301 / 01353 665106 to discuss how we can help keep your electrical safety in check.
