Keeping electrical safety in check

Keeping electrical safety in check

The figures don’t lie

5th April 2016

Whether you’re at home or work, electrical safety is paramount, and at MS Electrical we’re here to keep it in check. As a result, we were concerned to read the latest published statistics from Electrical Safety First, some of which we can share with you here. Perhaps the most alarming is that, on average, 2.5 million people in the UK receive a mains voltage electric shock every year, and that 350,000 of those electric shocks result in serious injury.

In addition, in 2011/12 there were 244 deaths and close to 6,000 injuries from accidental domestic fires in the UK. The biggest culprits for electricity-related deaths in that period were cooking appliances and the electrical supply, each of which accounted for ten fatalities, while washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and lighting were the cause of 2,325 domestic fires. Cooking appliances alone resulted in nearly 12,000 domestic fires and 1,500 injuries.

As Mark Smith, owner of MS Electrical Services, confirms, electrical safety should never be taken lightly. “From our point of view, the latest statistics from Electrical Safety First simply underline the importance of engaging a registered and qualified electrician to undertake any installation and maintenance work,” he says. “Not only that, it emphasises how important it is to undertake regular PAT testing and fixed wire testing to ensure that you have the safest possible environment at work and at home.”

To discuss how we can assist with your PAT testing, fixed wire testing and electrical installation work, please call us on 01223 850301 / 01353 665106.
