While UK law does not generally prescribe fixed PAT testing intervals for every appliance, employers have a responsibility to maintain electrical equipment where necessary to prevent danger. Our recommendation is to schedule annual PAT testing to mitigate risk.
It’s also prudent to encourage staff members to take simple actions to keep everyone safe, including:
- reporting damaged equipment without delay
- avoiding overloaded sockets and extension leads
- ensuring all appliances are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Ultimately, the consequences of an electrical fire can extend far beyond damage to the building itself. Injuries, destroyed equipment, lost data and prolonged business interruption can all carry substantial costs too. A proactive programme of inspection, maintenance and appropriate PAT testing can therefore provide an important line of defence against preventable workplace fires.
